The reason I am cycling

"The reason I am cycling" is a concise and reflective documentary by Daios Georgios, produced as an undergraduate project for the course History, Theory and Practice of Documentary at the Ionian University in 2020-2021 under the supervision of Chalkou Maria. The film follows a young bicycle rider who explains, in direct and personal terms, why he devotes time and effort to cycling, describing both the hardships and the rewarding moments that the sport gives him.
Visually the work privileges close-up studies of the bike and the rider at work, with the creak of spokes, the texture of tires and the scuff of shoes forming an intimate soundscape. The filmmaker favors an observational approach, often using tight framing, selective focus and restrained camera movement to emphasize the tactile, mechanical and bodily dimensions of cycling.
Although centered on an individual testimony, the documentary extends into broader themes of endurance, ritual, freedom of movement and identity formed through physical practice. Editing links sequences of training, rest and small gestures to shape a rhythmic narrative, and the soundtrack underscores moments of tension and release. The result is both a portrait of a young rider and a short cinematic essay on how sport becomes a way of living.
