Echoes of Modality is a creative musical venture offering a renewed perspective on Greek folk music and the modal music traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean. Rooted in folk heritage while embracing post-folk aesthetics, the project brings together arrangements of anonymous folk songs alongside original compositions by art-music composers inspired by folk music.

Through a process of musical re-creation, traditional plucked string instruments — oud, laouto, and mandolin — together with the human voice, enter into dialogue with the piano, whose presence enriches modal expression through subtle Western harmonic and timbral inflections.

Performers:

  • Panagiotis Sdoukos — voice; doctoral candidate in Folk Performing Arts at the Dept. of Audio & Visual Arts, Ionian University
  • Giorgos Pappas — traditional plucked string instruments; holder of an MA in Music Sciences and Arts from the University of Macedonia
  • Loukas Kourlis — piano; musicologist, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The project’s scientific supervision is undertaken by Renata Dalianoudi, PhD in Ethnomusicology, Associate Professor at the Dept. of Audio & Visual Arts, Ionian University, and Scientific Associate of ERT, who will also deliver the introductory presentation to the performance.

Day and place of the event: Sunday, 17 May, 20:00, Lilian Voudouri Music Library, Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall
